Summary
I Didn’t Know I Was Burning Out—Until It Was Too Late
I used to think burnout looked like collapse. Like quitting your job. Crying in the car. Sleeping for three days.
But when I burned out? It looked like this:
- Saying yes to things that made me miserable
- Resentment I couldn’t explain
- Weekends that didn’t feel like recovery
- Brain fog I blamed on aging
- Numbness I mistook for calm
I didn’t crash. I faded.
And one day I realized: this isn’t who I am. This is who I’ve become while trying to survive a system I never questioned.
Why We Don’t Catch Burnout Early
Most of us miss burnout in real time because:
- We’re taught that tired = normal
- We confuse productivity with worth
- We’re surrounded by people who are also barely hanging on
- We don’t have a fast, clear signal to stop us
I didn’t need a 100-question burnout inventory. I needed a 3-question gut check I could run any time, anywhere.
So I made one.
The Burnout Filter (3-Question Test)
Use this for any task, request, or commitment.
- Will this energize or deplete me long term?
(Check in with your body. Not your to-do list.) - Am I saying yes because I want to—or because I’m afraid not to?
(Fear-based yeses are burnout magnets.) - What would I tell someone I love if they were in my shoes?
(Take your own advice—then honor it.)
If I answer these honestly and still say yes, great. If not? I say no, delay it, or renegotiate the terms.
It has saved my sanity more times than I can count.
How It Changed My Work Life
Since using this filter, I’ve:
- Said no to projects that weren’t aligned
- Delegated tasks that drained me
- Built healthier workday rhythms
- Recovered my actual voice at work
- Rebuilt my calendar around clarity, not panic
The filter didn’t just save me from burnout. It gave me permission to live aligned.
What I Want You to Know
Burnout isn’t weakness, it’s wisdom that got ignored for too long. And your body? It will whisper until it has to scream. Let the whispers count.
You don’t need a new planner. You need a pattern interrupt.
The Burnout Filter is mine. Now it’s yours.
